Amber Rubarth in MA, NY, WA, OR, NV and CA.... + Join the STREET TEAM!!
WOW WOw WOW woot woot yeaH.
I got to open for Colin Hay (of Men at Work) last Thursday at my favorite venue, Tupelo Music Hall, in New Hampshire. It was glorious and magical and SOLD OUT and I sold out of every last CD I had (!!). Colin was magnificent.
AND last weekend we got to open for Vienna Teng's first 3 CD Release shows with my band The Paper Raincoat, SOLD OUT at Somerville Theater (where U2 just played last month!) and Le Poisson Rouge, plus we played the beautiful Keswick Theatre! Check out Vienna's new record, it's beautiful (and produced by my Paper Raincoat partner in crime, Alex Wong). We get to do more openings for her along the west coast too, yay!
I love life. I feel so lucky. I am trying now to start doing things a little differently, more time for writing, living, and making a positive impact on the world at large. Being more pro-active in life. If you have ideas on how, send 'em my way!

Life is good. I am writing a lot. Can’t wait to share some new songs with you. Even wrote a country tune the other day called "Wish We'd Gotten Drunk." Wow. Looking this week for some great duets, and still working on compiling songs for my cover song project when I have spare time. DO YOU KNOW ANY GREAT DUETS you can recommend I check out?
We also just announced THE VESPA EXPERIMENT which is going to be crazy and fun and help the environment and did I mention crazy and fun? It’s with two of my favoritest favorites, Jason Reeves and Brendan James. Oh boy oh boy. Up the California coast on (you guessed it).... Vespas! ambeR Rubarth song "Show Your Weakness" on ABC's Premiere of CUPID (New TV Sitcom) after Dancing with the Stars
My song "SHOW YOUR WEAKNESS" (Co-written by Marvin Etzioni & Amber Rubarth) is on the premiere episode of CUPID on ABC tonight!! March 31st, 10/9C (right after Dancing With The Stars!). Or rather "was" I suppose, I think it aired a few hours ago. I don't have a TV so I haven't seen it, but at least one person in the world has already written to me and said they heard it on there. I wonder what kind of scene they put it in?
This is pretty darn exciting for me. The only other thing I've had on network TV (well, I guess two things) was my song "NOVACAINE" (written by me, and I played guitar, wurly and sang on it) on NBC's show SAMANTHA, WHO? with Christina Applegate, in a scene where some lady is jealous and the song hits just as she opens her blouse to the dude and says "What, these aren't good enough for you?" Apparently the other lady likely had a better boob job, or perhaps she is not as nuts to do something like that. I don't understand TV, haven't had one since my mom threw it out when I was a kid because my dad watched too much Star Trek.
Oh yeah, and Real World Brooklyn also just aired (last week!) my song "ROUGH CUT" (The Paper Raincoat Remix) --co-written Amber Rubarth & Alex Wong, produced by the insanely talented Alex Wong) on REAL WORLD BROOKLYN. We both live in Brooklyn also, but apparently we are in the fake part of it because it is not anything like the show. Rough Cut played over a very dramatic phone call between Eric and his girlfriend. I hope it works out with them.
That is all for now. Thank you TV for liking my songs, they like you too (a lot).
Yay.

sxsw was rad
got to see lots of great music, play a few really great shows, meet a lot of great people, speak on my first panel (woohoo!), visit with a bunch of my favorite people all at the same time.
there were a few moments amidst the craziness of half hour band switches and crowded streets and barbeque that slowed down perfectly...
jason reeves' show at the driskill hotel, everyone sitting on the floor. jason is a wonderful writer.
ray don and his backwash band at the one 2 one, specifically the moment when he jumped up on the bar mid-song and tore off his overalls to reveal american flag underwear and sing about what his grandma taught him.
skipping around town lake (which is actually a city river) with jason and julie and makana, looking at turtles.
talking with my manager slim moon and realizing how cool it is to be working with people i admire so much.
and lots more...
i stayed up all friday night and hopped a plane from austin to panama city, florida at 6am. bart and elijah picked me up from the airport and we went back to the house to set up for the concert that night. they went all out, such lovely people and a beautiful setting.... outdoor concert, pre-sold out with the most people they've ever had there (yay!), under mossy trees in warm florida air. carrot cake. home cooked dinner from susan. concert was terrific, entire night felt connected and beautiful and honest, don't know what could be better.
my goal this week is to get out of my head. heart above head. i've found myself overthinking things lately. i even just overthunk writing out my goal.
instead, i will play more, lose myself more in what i'm doing.
waaaaaayeeeaahhhhhhh sing more and snap more and skip more and love more and dance more.
act naturally. play. edit later. isn't as good to edit during or you miss the experience.
hope you are well. i'm happy to be back in new york.
played a secret set last night at 1am with john elliott who is brilliant. it was fun. i've never seen such an enthusiastic audience that late on a sunday night, or maybe ever. i was smiling the whole time and it's always nice standing next to someone you admire so much, trading songs back and forth and then catching your jaw when they play their next song.
thank you everyone who came to the shows in austin and florida and new york, and of course to you for reading this. wow.
i love people (a lot).
morning has come.
i want to be great
i often have this tug of war with songwriting, jerking back and forth across the line of feeling like i just discovered something important and beautiful, and feeling like a 9 year old turning a paper in that doesn't deserve more than a B- (and that's if the teacher's feeling nice).
i want to be great. i want to write great songs. i want to have a repertoire that can evoke emotion from a room and take them on a journey that stays with them years later, that they can lock that moment into their memory and bring it up when they want to feel something. i want to add to the world in a way that lasts, and i want to do it through music. i want to have songs that people listen to quiet in their rooms at night when they are trying to get through hardships, and i want to have songs that you can turn up loud in the mornings and feel like it is a great day to be alive.
i've been on the receiving end of this musical goodness from some of my favorite artists (recent ones that come to mind are tom waits, john elliott, andi almqvist, josh ritter, louis armstrong, randy newman) and i want to do everything i can to be someone who creates music that means that much to someone else.
it doesn't happen by getting a record deal or a placement on grey's anatomy or being invited to a big showcase or being in the top 10 most listened to artists. all of those are wonderful and have nothing to do with it. a great song is or isn't there, and i don't know exactly what it takes but i know that it doesn't change its greatness based on exposure.
i do believe those things are terribly important, a great song unheard is sadder than a dropped ice cream cone (and that's sad). i've been incredibly lucky in my journey so far to have so many amazing people and opportunities that have stopped by, and i've appreciated and loved every one. right now i need to get back to the songs, i am yearning to know the guitar and piano more closely and write deeper and dig further inside and improve myself as a songwriter and musician and performer. get to the core, the honest good stuff.
these last few days i've locked myself inside and written, practiced or recorded just about every waking moment.
it is the most wonderful thing i've done in 4 years.
i'm going to do more, and am excited to have new songs to share with you soon.
i'll be staying off myspace and facebook for a while so i can practice and write fully without interruption. i feel like if i don't do it now i won't do it. can't wait to share what i dig up with you, i'll post little videos and songs every so often, so please subscribe to my youtube channel if you want to hear the in progress stuff. and i'll surely still check in here still every so often to send you some love. :)
http://youtube.com/moonlightoverthrewu
thank you for listening.
you are all remarkable.
more news soon. xO
